How to replace Oxygen Sensor O2 Lambda Probe

  • Step 1: Let the engine cool before attempting to remove a sensor
  • Step 2: Jack up the vehicle if you need to reach a sensor under it
  • Step 3: Locate the oxygen sensor underneath the hood or vehicle
  • Step 4: Disconnect the electrical connection to the oxygen sensor
  • Step 5: Spray some penetrating oil onto the sensor to loosen it
  • Step 6: Unscrew the oxygen sensor using a ratchet wrench
  • Step 7: Select a new oxygen sensor that is the same as the old one
  • Step 8: Add a small amount of anti-seize to the new sensor
  • Step 9: Turn the sensor clockwise to secure it on the exhaust line
  • Step 10: Plug the electrical connector back into the vehicle
  • Step 11: Start the car to see if the problem is fixed

Note: When replacing multiple O2 sensors, be sure to match each one by OEM number and position (upstream / downstream) based on your vehicle’s setup.
